Celebrity hairstylist Candy Shaw, the CEO and founder of Sunlights Balayage, the makers and purveyors of the world’s leading balayage products and education, has been named Atlanta’s ‘Small Business Person of the Year’ by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, at an awards ceremony held at the Georgia Aquarium. Shaw won in the ‘Emerging Entrepreneur’ category for businesses between the ages of 3-7 for her 2014 garage start-up. Wells Fargo’s Regional President, Mike Donnelly, presented Candy with the prestigious award at the 31st Annual Awards celebration.
Of the eighteen honorees, seventeen attended college. Half went to graduate school (predominately receiving MBAs). And about a quarter hold Doctorate degrees.
In her acceptance speech Candy observed: “I never went to college. I never even went to beauty school. I succeeded based on the shear will and determination to survive. I created Sunlights to help stylists, who are predominately women (85% in N.A.), ‘earn a better living and live a better life.’ I also wanted to decrease the environmental impact that hairdressing has on the planet, by making Sunlights a much ‘greener,’ more sustainable method of highlighting hair.”
Industry notables contacted by the Atlanta Business Chronicle had this to say about Candy:
Candy Shaw is a wonderful businesswoman. The hardest working person I know, her product is one of the fastest growing in the industry. I’ve known Candy for almost 10 years, and am always amazed by her enthusiasm, her work ethic but most of all – her willingness to share and help others. She is truly ‘the face of our industry’ – and highlights all that is good about the salon community.
Steve Reiss Publisher, Modern Salon Media
I have known Candy for over 25 years. Some would consider us competitors, but that never mattered. Candy is genuine and truly engaged, no matter who is standing in front of her. She is inclusive in a world that often times forces people to be exclusive. Does Candy have one of the best products and businesses around? Probably, but I wouldn’t know much about that. What I do know is that Candy, the person/friend/wife/business woman and human being brings a lot of hope and joy to me personally, as well as to the masses.

Celebrity hairstylist Candy Shaw—recently named North America’s ‘Educator of the Year’ and Sunlights Balayage--the maker and purveyor of the world’s leading balayage products and education, have launched THE BALAY BOX 2.0, ushering in ‘The Next Generation of Balayage Education!’™
The Original BALAY BOX®, the ‘complete balayage class in a box’ containing everything a stylist needs to learn and do balayage, first launched in 2014, has been geniusly followed up with the release of the all new THE BALAY BOX 2.0, the balayage kit designed EXCLUSIVELY for the advanced balayage artist.
“Balayage is NOT just for blondes anymore!” says Shaw, who is widely regarded as the world’s foremost authority on balayage education. “Balayage is faster, more profitable, ‘greener’ and more fun than traditional foil highlighting. The BALAY BOX 2.0 significantly broadens the spectrum of haircoloring techniques that with proper instruction can be accomplished with balayage” says Candy. In addition to state-of-the-art education the kit contains the products necessary to achieve the advanced looks.
Just in time for the Holidays and the New Year and priced to sell (M.S.R.P. to U.S. stylists is $59), THE BALAY BOX 2.0 is half-the-price of the original BALAY BOX. “The Balay Box 2.0 is an incredible value that will increase profits for all salons who follow Candy’s recipe,” said Joe Mastalia, President, Depasquale Salon Systems (Sunlight’s NY, NJ, CT & PA distributor). In Australia, where Sunlights’ classes are the norm, David Taylor, co-owner of Dateline Imports, said “leave it to Candy to once again ‘change the game’ in the business of balayage education.”
Sunlights debuted THE BALAY BOX 2.0 at the Premiere beauty shows in Columbus & Birmingham this fall where over 600 hundred kits flew off the shelves. “If sales at the recent Premiere shows are any indication, Candy’s got another ‘blockbuster’ on her hands” said Howard Britt, founder and president of the Premiere Show Group. Candy can next be seen teaching at the ISSE show in Long Beach, California in January.

Candy Shaw, the owner of Atlanta’s Jamison Shaw Hairdressers and the founder of SUNLIGHTS Balayage, the makers and purveyors of the world’s leading balayage products and education, was named the 2017 recipient of the ‘Jerry Gordon Salon Business Leadership Award’ by the Cosmetologists Chicago Association at an awards ceremony held on Friday, 24 March 2017 at America’s Beauty Show. Shaw is the fourth recipient of the prestigious Award.
Presented each year at the ABS by the Cosmetologists Chicago Board of Directors to commemorate Jerry Gordon’s extraordinary life and legacy, the Award seeks to honor a leader in the beauty industry who exemplifies what Gordon stood for including expertise in their craft, running a sound and sustainable business, strong leadership skills, high ethical standards, a passion for lifelong learning, a commitment to mentoring others and a desire to better our industry.
Karen Gordon, owner of Chicago’s J. Gordon Designs, and Jerry’s wife and business partner, had this to say about the Committee’s choice: “I know in my heart how pleased Jerry would be about Candy’s selection. He loved Candy and her family very much. He had the utmost respect for her business practices and he was incredibly excited to watch her continue to grow in new directions. Above all, Jerry was a strong supporter of smart, talented and dynamic women, and Candy was ‘top of his list’. I can't think of a more worthy recipient than Candy Shaw” said Karen.
Established in 2015, last year’s winner was Nick Arrojo, the British hairdresser who gained acclaim on TV’s ‘What Not to Wear’.
In response to being honored Candy said: “As an educator, I’m often asked who my mentors are and invariably Jerry Gordon is always on my list! I’ve looked up to Jerry since I was a young girl growing up in Intercoiffure. Jerry was a contemporary of my dad and was universally loved for ‘telling it like it is’, for his quick wit and for freely offering great advice. I attribute much of my success to the lessons I learned from Jerry Gordon. Like E.F Hutton, when Jerry spoke people listened.”
Candy was presented with a beautiful Baccarat crystal rearing stallion as her Award. The stallion pays tribute to the Ferrari logo since Gordon raced Ferraris. The color of Gordon’s last Ferrari? SUNLIGHTS yellow, of course!

When celebrity-stylist Candy Shaw, the creator of SUNLIGHTS Balayage--the makers and purveyors of the world’s leading balayage products and education, launched her company three-years ago her goal was to double hairdresser productivity world-wide. Balayage helps hairdressers everywhere (who are mostly women) earn a better living and live a better life. Since SUNLIGHTS fast, efficient, ‘no-nonsense’ method of balayage education and products allow hairdressers to see two to three times the number of guests in a day, it enables stylists to double, often triple, their incomes.
Recently released industry statistic wholeheartedly support SUNLIGHTS’ claims.
Each January the U.S. beauty industry anxiously awaits the publication of Salon Today’s 200 which lists North America’s top 200 most successful salons. Described as “the most prestigious business competition in the industry”, this month marks the 20th Anniversary of the announcement of the coveted Awards by Salon Today--Modern Salon’s sister publication. (p.10)
According to Salon Today’s statistics, the average annual gross sales per square foot for all Top 200 Honorees is just over $400. Jamison Shaw Hairdressers, named after Candy’s dad--a former world-champion competition hairdresser, is one of just “a handful of salons who generated annual gross sales of $800 per square foot or more.” (p 23). With 50 chairs, making Candy’s SUNLIGHTS salon one of the largest of the Salon Today ‘Super Producers’, Jamison Shaw Hairdressers is among the top 5% of U.S. earners, bringing in twice the money of the average salon per square foot.
“How’d we do it?” asks Candy, “Easy! Thanks SUNLIGHTS balayage! The numbers don’t lie. They prove what we’ve been saying all along, that SUNLIGHTS enables hairdressers to double, even triple, their incomes. We’re receiving reports from around the country of six figure growth in salon and suite revenues thanks to SUNLIGHTS. In fact, the three SUNLIGHTS salons mentioned in the Top 200, while making up less than 1% of the survey’s population, are responsible for bringing in nearly 4% of the survey’s gross revenues, or roughly $17 million. Everyone’s invited to join SUNLIGHTS’ balayage revolution and ‘paint your way to financial freedom’.”
SUNLIGHTS is currently distributed by a ‘Who’s Who’ ‘A’ list of ‘indie’ distributors in eight countries. To find one near you go to www.sunlightsbalayage.com/find_a_distributor.
You can next see Candy and the SUNLIGHTS Artisan Team, 28-30 January 2017, at the International Salon & Spa Expo in Long Beach, California. To host or attend a SUNLIGHTS class near you, so you too can learn to double your salon’s or suite’s income, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or visit our website at www.sunlightbalayage.com.

Celebrity stylist Candy Shaw, the founder of SUNLIGHTS Balayage, Inc., the makers and purveyors of the world’s leading balayage products, was named ‘Maverick of the Year’ at the 13th annual Stevie Awards® honoring ‘Women in Business’ at a recent ceremony in New York’s Time Square attended by over 500 people.
Lang Sias, a former U.S. Navy Fighter Pilot and TOPGUN Instructor said this about Candy, “I’ve flown with plenty of fighter pilots and I can say that my good friend Candy is a true ‘Maverick’ in every sense of the word! As long as I’ve known Candy, she’s been breaking down barriers and shattering glass ceilings on behalf of women in business everywhere. I’d gladly go into business combat with Candy--she can be my ‘wingman’ anytime! Congratulations on being named ‘Maverick of the Year’.”
The Stevie Awards for Women in Business are the world’s top honor for female entrepreneurs, executives and the companies they run. This year’s competitions involved more than 10,000 nominees from more than sixty countries. The selections were made by an esteemed panel of 150 judges from around the world. “We are thrilled and humbled to be able to recognize so many outstanding women..., and to share their stories of achievement with the world!” said Michael Gallagher, Stevie Awards® President.
A ‘Maverick’ and entrepreneur her entire life, Candy never went to college or beauty school. Severely dyslexic, she graduated high school by trading haircuts for math homework. Never one to follow conventional rules, Candy has gone on to become one of the most successful and well-respected hair stylists in the world. Nicknamed ‘The Balay Lama®’ she is widely regarded as the world’s foremost authority on balayage education.
“I accept this Award on behalf of the entire SUNLIGHTS nation,” said Candy. “Without their help none of this would have been possible. My rallying cry for women and girls everywhere is this: Believe in yourself and your dreams because dreams really DO come true. Be proud to be a woman in business. We work harder than most, sometimes with little appreciation for our accomplishments. I’m overwhelmed to win this amazing award and share it with all the women in our industry!”
With an estimated 160 million viewers in 180 countries expected to tune-in to watch the NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons take on the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI, and with 30 second TV commercials costing upwards of $5 million USD, the breath-takingly beautiful blondes, bomb-shell brunettes and ravishing red-heads ‘whipping their hair’ on the sidelines are brought to you courtesy of Jamison Shaw Hairdressers, the Official Salon of the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders.
Celebrity hair-stylist Candy Shaw, owner of Atlanta’s award-winning Jamison Shaw Hairdressers and the founder of Sunlights Balayage--the makers and purveyors of the world’s leading balayage products and education, has been caring for the cheerleaders’ tresses for nearly two-decades and will be accompanying the team to the Big Game. “These women are not only gorgeous”, says Shaw, “they are also world-class athletes in their own right (when was the last time you tried to do a triple-back-flip?), and they are extremely accomplished in their professional lives as well. They are also very involved in community service.” All hold down full-time jobs, or are full-time students, nearly all have completed their college degrees, and many have received or are pursuing graduate educations. “This year’s squad has been an absolute pleasure to work with” said Shaw “and I couldn’t be happier for them or prouder of them” as the NFC Champion Falcons (11-5) head to Houston for Super Bowl LI led by National Football League MVP, Falcon’s quarterback, Matt Ryan.
“Balayage is BIG in the ATL” said Candy “and SUNLIGHTS Professionnel Balayage Lightener is what we use at Jamison Shaw to give the Cheerleaders their extraordinary LIFT! (no pun intended). SUNLIGHTS is responsible for the cheerleaders’ natural-looking sun-kissed highlights that look as if they spent their summers at the beach, instead of hard at work in rehearsals.”
Each Spring Shaw is responsible for helping judge the cheerleaders’ final tryouts when hundreds of hopefuls audition for a spot on the squad. “The judges take into account a large number of criteria” said Candy “but it’s my job to keep a watchful eye on the hair. It’s important to build a diverse squad that relates to every woman’s beauty” Candy notes.
Be sure to tune-in this Sunday, 5 February 2017, at 6:30 PM ET (11:30 PM Greenwich Mean Time) to see the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders cheer on the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI including a half-time show featuring Lady Gaga!
This past Sunday, ten lucky Balayage Believers got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pick the brain of the Balay Lama! She shared her tips and tricks on how to build their business and increase their success as hairdressers and entrepreneurs. They enjoyed a tour of the Sunlights warehouse to see how it all gets done. Following that, they settled in to discuss the business of hair with Candy Shaw over coffee and bagels.
This was certainly a morning none of them will forget! Will there be another chance like this? Stay tuned to find out! In the mean time, there are always plenty of chances to learn how to Paint Your Way to Financial Freedom from the Balay Lama - click here to find a class near you!
